M3U vs Xtream Codes: What Is the Difference?

When you set up an IPTV player you are usually offered two ways to enter your playlist: paste an M3U link, or fill in Xtream Codes details — a server address, a username and a password. They often deliver the same channels from the same service, but they are not the same mechanism.
Here is what actually differs, and how to decide which one to use.
M3U: one link that contains the list
An M3U link points at a playlist file. When the player opens it, the server returns a text file listing every channel and where to fetch its stream. Your credentials are typically baked into the link itself as parameters.
It is simple and universal — nearly every player supports M3U. The trade-off is that the list is a snapshot: if your provider adds or reorganises channels, the player has to fetch the file again to notice.
Xtream Codes: an API the player talks to
Xtream Codes is an interface rather than a file. Instead of one link you supply three values — the server address, your username and your password — and the player queries the server for what it needs.
Because it is an API, it can expose more structure: categories, live channels, films and series as separate collections, and richer programme information. Players that support it can present a more organised interface.
Which should you use?
Use whichever your provider gave you — that is the honest answer. If you received a single long link, that is M3U. If you received a server address plus a username and password, those are Xtream Codes credentials.
If you were given both, Xtream Codes is generally the better choice when your player supports it, because the categorisation and programme data tend to be better. 67IPTV supports both formats.

Both formats are added the same way: Dashboard → Playlists → Add, then choose the M3U or Xtream tab. The details are saved to your account and delivered to the televisions you pair.
They are transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections, kept on access-controlled servers, used only to load your playlist on your own registered devices, and never sold or shared. Deleting the playlist or your account removes them.
Common questions
Is one format faster than the other?
Playback speed comes from your provider and your internet connection, not from the format. Xtream Codes can feel more responsive when browsing large libraries because the player requests one category at a time instead of loading a single large list.
Can I add both to one account?
You can store playlists of either type. The free plan keeps one playlist active at a time.
Where do I get an M3U link or Xtream credentials?
